Owners in our community have expressed concern and frustration on the impending closure of 101st Street at Highway 8. It is certain that this change will impact how residents and neighbours will commute, as will the inevitable ring road opening in 2024, and the EVRC Board of Directors understands concerns about the closure that is required at this stage of ring road construction.
The EVRC Board and committees have closely followed the development of the West Calgary Ring Road Project, including attending the public information sessions. We’d like to share a few details that we have noted through our diligence over the past few years.
a. Alberta Transportation has been consistent that 101st Street would be closed once ring road construction reached a stage that required it to be.
b. This intention was communicated to the public at a number of public open houses most recently at the Public Information Session Q & A on June 22, 2021. One of those information sessions was held at EVRC.
c. The permanent closure at Highway 8 and 101st Street was scheduled for this fall (October 1st). The date for permanent closure seems to only recently been made available to the public and should have been better communicated by Alberta Transportation.
d. Due to safety concerns, Alberta Transportation has moved the full closure date to September 17th.
