We have recently received notification from the Transportation Safety Coordinator for Rocky View Schools informing us of an increased number of reports of vehicles passing school buses while the alternating red lights / stop sign are active and students are boarding or disembarking the buses in Elbow Valley.

School buses transporting students in Elbow Valley are required, by law, to use their alternating light system to protect students from oncoming traffic. It is illegal to pass a school bus when red lights are flashing.  When a school bus is stopped and the overhead alternating red lights have been activated, traffic from both directions must come to a complete stop and remain stopped until the red lights have been deactivated. Offending vehicles are subject to a fine of $543.00 and 6 Demerit points.

Buses within Calgary city limits often do not use their light system and it is important we share this information with our community neighbours. If you note a school bus in Elbow Valley with children boarding or disembarking without the use of their alternating light system, please report the date and time to transporation@rockyview.ab.ca
