SPRINGBANK FLOOD MITIGATION RESERVOIR
Posted On November 13, 2020

The following information was recently communicated to the Elbow Valley Board of Directors and may be of interest to some residents.

The Government of Alberta is committed to flood mitigation for southern Alberta and Calgary. Alberta Transportation is currently pursuing the regulatory approval of the Springbank Off-stream Reservoir (Springbank Reservoir or SR1) project to mitigate against future floods like the one that devastated Calgary and southern Alberta in 2013. SR1 is a flood mitigation project located adjacent to the Elbow River, 15 km west of Calgary and has been undergoing review by provincial and federal regulators since 2016.

On December 2, 2020, the Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) will conduct a pre-hearing conference and anyone who is interested in participating and sharing their view must provide a statement of intent to participate and a written summary of their submission by November 20, 2020 to laura.friend@nrcb.ca. More information is available here.

A video illustrating the operation of and design image renderings showing various locations on the Springbank Reservoir have been recently uploaded to the Alberta Transportation’s website at www.alberta.ca/springbank-off-stream-reservoir.aspx
