Invitation to comment on Highway 8 Elbow River Bridge Replacement
The Government of Canada has released a public notice regarding the replacement of the Highway 8 Elbow River Bridge as part of the Southwest Calgary Ring Road project. Below is a summary of the project:
The existing eastbound bridge has been deemed unsafe and is now closed, with a replacement planned 20 metres north of the original bridge. The new bridge will initially have two lanes, with foundations in place to support a future four-lane expansion.
Key Construction Details:
- The westbound bridge will remain but will serve westbound traffic only.
- The old eastbound bridge will be removed and replaced.
- Temporary berms will be used to isolate construction activities, minimizing environmental impact.
- At least one-third of the river will remain open to maintain water flow.
- Erosion control measures such as scour protection and self-launching riprap toes will be installed.
Residents are encouraged to provide comments or concerns regarding this project. Feedback can be submitted until February 28, 2025.
